13.5 L x 5 W x 5.5 H ft (4,1 x 1,5 x 1,7 m)“Field Station: White River Valley ” is a mobile drawing installation, tracing the specific surrounding landscape onto the sheer fabric that is pitched in the form of a survival shelter. The calligraphic depiction of the site from within the tent structure examines, encapsulates, and situates oneself into this specific place and time. Its mark making suggests a Chinese landscape painting, a written translation, or an observational record of this location that, once fulfilled, can be packed away, carried, and re-lived elsewhere. This artistic fieldwork embraces the contemporary phenological research which gathers historical environmental data not only from the lens of Western’s scientific conventions, but also deduces valuable information from descriptions of nature in traditional artforms such as scroll painting, poetry, song writing, storytelling, etc., that have been passed through many generations in Eastern civilization.
To be in a place is to be entangled in the web of reciprocity, to be in symbiotic relationships with all things. And it is a responsibility to gently tease out each thread, follow the lines, and witness the weave patterns.
